Bates proved it can win when it snapped a New England record 37-game losing streak by defeating winless Bowdoin 33-29 in college football Saturday.
P.J. McGrail rushed for 231 yards and scored three touchdowns for Bates, whose last victory also was over Bowdoin – 19-13 on Nov. 3, 1990.
Bates took a safety on its last possession to close out the scoring. Ramon Martinez then drove his team to the Bates-2, where Greg Donohue stopped him as time expired in the game at Lewiston.
Martinez passed for 367 yards and three touchdowns for the Polar Bears (0-7), who took their first and only lead 20-19 on Doug Brawn’s third-quarter reception.
Bates (1-6) moved back in front on McGrail’s third touchdown, a 3-yard run, and added a fourth-quarter touchdown on quarterback Dan Hooley’s 1-yard keeper. Hooley also passed for 144 yards and two scores.

Colby 33, Tufts 6
At Waterville, Peter Matson passed for 175 yards and one touchdown and ran for another as Colby trounced Tufts.
Brad Smith was Colby’s leading ground gainer, rushing for 116 yards and one touchdown. Lawaun Curry chalked up 41 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown.
The Mules also scored on Jason Jabar’s 54-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.
Tufts’ only score came on Dan Morse’s 26-yard strike to Jeff Soderquist in the end zone with 29 seconds left in the game.

At Framingham, Mass., Maine Maritime’s Rob Marchitello rushed for 221 yards and four touchdowns as the Mariners won.
It was the eleventh 200-yard game in Marchitello’s career, which ties him with Marcus Allen for the NCAA record for career 200-yard games. Marchitello will attempt to break the record in the Mariners’ season finale next weekend at Westfield State.
The win, MMA’s fifth straight, improved its record to 6-2, 5-2 in the New England Football Conference. The Rams dropped to 2-6 and 2-5 in the conference.
The Mariners dominated from start to finish, racking up 402 yards rushing.
