The pros and cons of Maine Yankee repairs have been discussed ad infinitum, and several critically serious objections have been raised. Now we have a highly approving “evaluation” which is really just whitewash. No reasonable comparisons of actual conditions to any requirements have been made (at least not reported), and in fact no requirements have been indicated beyond some rather obscure Nuclear Regulatory Commission limits. Thus, they will start up with fingers crossed and wait to see what happens.
The only good thing that can happen now is a massive failure during start-up, sufficiently extensive to prevent full operation. Otherwise there is a real potential for very serious damage to us all. Carl C. Osgood Surry
