Japanese troupe to present play by William Yeats

The Umewaka Troupe of Noh actors will present the final showing of William Yeats’ play “At the Hawk’s Well” at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the Pavilion Theater in Orono.

A combination of music, dance and traditional Japanese theatrical technique, the production is part of the W.B. Yeats-Ezra Pound Celebration Conference taking place this week at the University of Maine.

“At the Hawk’s Well” is the story of Cuchulian, a traditional Irish folk hero, who learns lessons about hope and rejuvenation through his encounter with an old man and an old woman.

Spoken in Japanese, the presentation includes three musicians and two actors who wear elaborate costumes and masks which are part of the ceremonial Noh convention.

For information or reservations, call the Maine Center for the Arts box office at 581-1755.
