Checkout of King book leads to controversy

MERRIMACK, N.H. — A parent upset her seventh-grade son was able to check out a Stephen King novel out of the Mastricola Middle School is asking the district to set up a parental consent system.

Failing that, April Sarasin said she wants the school district to pull inappropriate and profane books off the shelf.

“I’m not out to ban all the books,” said Sarasin. “But if they can’t work out some sort of a parental consent system, then I don’t think these books should be in the middle school library.”

The book was “The Talisman,” written by King and Peter Straub.

School district officials say they have received similar requests in the past but have never been able to find a practical way to monitor what every child is reading.
