PITTSFIELD – A woman lost control of her vehicle on black ice just before 5 p.m. Sunday, drove through a field and crashed into a house, doing more than $15,000 damage to the building.

Wendy Cummings, 39, of Pittsfield was driving west on outer Somerset Avenue when she lost control of a 1995 Ford Explorer, according to Pittsfield police Officer Jeffrey Vanadestine.

“Speed and road conditions were the factors,” said Vanadestine on Sunday evening.

Cummings’ vehicle struck the front corner of a home owned by Peter Vigue. The tenants were home at the time of the crash and were uninjured, said Vanadestine.

“The boy was eating pizza and watching TV when he heard a loud bang,” said the officer. The boy’s mother was at the rear of the home in the kitchen, said Vanadestine.

The car did not enter the home, but pushed the walls in and broke several windows. The fill pipes for the house’s oil tanks also were sheared off.

Cummings received lacerations, and head and neck injuries. She was taken by Sebasticook Valley Hospital Ambulance to the hospital for treatment. The vehicle she was driving had about $6,500 in damage.

The Pittsfield Fire Department also assisted at the crash scene.

The accident still was under investigation Sunday.
