CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -Joe Campbell of Bangor was given a spot in the starting lineup and responded with a 19-point, eight-rebound effort, but it wasn’t quite enough as Weber State edged the University of Maine men’s basketball team 69-66 in the Dr. Pepper Classic Sunday night.
Maine will play Lipscomb College at 6 tonight in the consolation game. Tourney host UT-Chattanooga beat Lipscomb 87-78 Sunday night.
Campbell played in place of senior forward Clayton Brown, who did not play in the game. Brown had to miss practice time for family reasons and missed Sunday’s game, but will be back Monday. Senior guard Derrick Jackson, who is recovering from a broken rib, also missed the game.
The Wildcats, now 9-3 on the season, outrebounded Maine 41-38 and committed just 12 turnovers to Maine’s 19.
“The sad thing is it’s another loss, but the good thing is we played another team that would be a top-two team in American East and had chances to win late,” said Maine coach John Giannini. “We know how close we are to being a good team, but we need to get over this hump.”
With Weber holding a 66-65 lead and 1:29 left, Maine center Justin Rowe blocked a shot and point guard Eric Dobson got the rebound. Campbell was fouled, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. With Weber up 68-66 and 35 seconds left, Dobson drove in for a layup and drew contact but no foul and missed the shot.
After a Maine foul and one Weber free throw, Maine ran a set but couldn’t get the shot it wanted. After a timeout with 17 seconds left, Maine ran an out-of-bounds play for Campbell, but couldn’t get a shot. After another timeout with four seconds left, guard Kevin Reed’s 3-point attempt was unsuccessful and Weber ran out the rest of the clock.
Maine headed into halftime with a 34-30 deficit, but outscored Weber 6-1 to start the second half and grab the lead.
Senior center Justin Rowe finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, and five blocked shots for the Bears, now 4-7 on the season. Point guard Eric Dobson had 16 points, seven boards, and five assists.
The Black Bears shot 44.6 percent from the field for the game to Weber’s 37.3 percent effort and 40 percent (8-20) from the 3-point line to Weber’s 25 (6-24), but the Wildcats went 13-for-16 from the foul line while Maine was barely above .500 with an 8-for-15 effort.
“We beat them in just about every category, but then you look at turnovers and free throws and that’s what hurt us,” said Giannini.
