UM student charged in drunken driving

Officials in Penobscot County reported one drunken driving incident as a result of New Year’s celebrations.

Lucas Steward, 21, of Belgrade had been driving his car on College Avenue in Orono when University of Maine police Sgt. Jeff King noticed that Steward’s windshield was covered with ice and Steward was navigating his vehicle by leaning his head out of the window, University of Maine spokesman Joe Carr said Wednesday night.

King stopped Steward as he drove onto campus near Alfond Arena at about 2:30 a.m. Steward claimed that he had begun drinking at 4 p.m. Tuesday and had stopped at about 11 p.m., King said. The University of Maine student told police that he felt fine and thought he had sobered up.

Steward failed field sobriety tests and was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where tests found his blood alcohol level to be twice the state’s legal limit at 0.16 percent, King said. Steward was also charged with driving with an obstructed view. He is scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Feb. 7.

A Bangor man was charged with assault and telephone harassment after a disagreement with a woman over $10 on Tuesday evening.

The 40-year-old woman told Bangor police Officer Stephen Jordan that John Oliver Pope, 40, had come to her Hammond Street home, forced his way in as she was trying to open the front door for him, and then allegedly punched her in the face while demanding the $10 she owed him. The woman claimed that Pope also phoned her home several times after that.

The officer did not see any marks on the woman’s face when she pointed to a bruise she claimed was caused by the alleged attack.

Three more calls to the home were made while police were there, and Jordan overheard threats and sexual obscenities directed at the woman and her family. Dispatchers with the Bangor Police Department contacted the telephone company and traced the calls to the Brewer Motor Inn, where officials found Pope.

Pope admitted to going to the woman’s home and calling her repeatedly but denied striking her, Jordan said. Pope was issued summonses to appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Feb. 3 for the two charges.

An Old Town woman was arrested early New Year’s Day after she refused police orders to walk on the sidewalk.

Sharon Bard, 22, had been walking on South Main Street near Chester Street just after 1 a.m. Wednesday when Old Town police Officer Seth Burnes asked her to get out of the road and walk on the sidewalk, Old Town police Sgt. Scott Casey said. Bard claimed that the sidewalks were too icy to walk on and police offered to get her a taxicab.

Bard refused, however, and after numerous warnings to stay out of the road, told police she would walk on the side of the road, Casey said. Bard, however, got back in the road as soon as Burnes walked away and began to yell obscenities at the officer.

Bard was placed under arrest for obstructing a public way. On the way to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, Bard spit on Barnes, Casey said, and a charge of assault was added. She was later released from jail on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Feb. 3.

A Bar Harbor woman suffered minor injuries when she lost control of her car and struck a telephone pole Wednesday morning.

Chloe Dargis, 19, had been driving her white 1994 Mazda Protege north on Bennoch Road when she lost control of the vehicle near Godfrey Drive in an area covered in ice and slush, Orono police Officer Travis Erickson said. The driver’s side of the car struck a utility pole and peeled the fender back.

The University of Maine student initially complained of pain but refused treatment, Erickson said. Dargis had been wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,600. The utility pole was not damaged.
