Hampden women win video award, b’gosh

What started as a lark wound up resulting in a national video award for two Hampden women.

In their filmmaking debut, Carla Lafayette and Tami Campbell earned a bronze medal in the worldwide OshKosh B’Gosh Picture Perfect Photo Contest.

The two sisters’ entry was a fashion show of OshKosh clothing done to an original rap song performed by their 14-year-old nephew, Shawn Ravenscraft.

There were a total of one gold, two silver and three bronze medal winners, chosen from 550 videos.

“I bought an outfit for my daughter, and the contest was advertised on the tag,” said Lafayette. “My sister bought a camcorder, using the contest as an excuse. We thought it would be fun.”

Lafayette served as camerawoman, while Campbell directed the video. Modeling overalls, dresses, play outfits, swimwear and hats by OshKosh were Lafayette’s children Daniel, 6, Ramsey, 4, and Annaliese, 2, Campbell’s children Jillian, 7, Erin, 5, and Trevor, 3, and their two cousins, MacKenzie Rawcliffe, 4, and Kimbel Rawcliffe, 1. Ravenscraft’s two sisters and four mothers helped out with the project.

The filming took one afternoon, then they taped Ravenscraft’s rap composition.

“It took a lot longer than we planned on,” said Lafayette. “It took three evenings to edit it, getting the music to match with the video. It gives you a little insight into what filmmakers have to work with, especially with children.”

As a bronze medalist, Lafayette and Campbell won a $500 cash prize and a $50 OshKosh B’Gosh gift certificate. The prize money was divided among the creative talent.

“Everybody put half in the bank, then blew the other half,” Lafayette said. “Tami used her winnings to make a payment on the camera.”
