Dereck Treadwell of the University of Maine and Amy Winchester of Dartmouth College turned in outstanding performances in weekend track and field action at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
Treadwell, a junior from Old Town, improved his chances for earning a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and bettered his school record during Saturday’s running of the 1,500 meters at the IC4A Championship in Fairfax, Va.
Treadwell ran the 1,500 in 3 minutes, 43.56 seconds in his Saturday heat, also qualifying provisionally for the U.S. Olympic Trials. He finished second in Sunday’s 1,500 final in 3:46.67, earing All-East honors.
At the women’s ECAC Championships, Winchester won the shot put. The senior from Orrington heaved the ball 50 feet, 10 1/4 inches. She also placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 152-1.
Previously, Treadwell was ranked 17th nationally in the 1,500 and should improve his standing. The NCAA automatic qualifying time is 3:41.14. The NCAA championship is schedu UMaine’s Andrew Oliver of Derby, Vt., placed second in the javelin with a throw of 213-plus feet at the IC4As.
At the ECACs, Black Bear Heather Pola of East Falmouth, Mass., placed 10th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:28.7.
