Beacon 10K picks charity

PORTLAND – Seeds of Peace, an organization that promotes tolerance and understanding among youths around the world, had been chosen as the beneficiary for this year’s People Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race.

This means that Seeds of Peace, which has been bringing together youths from troubled regions of the world to coexist in an internationally-recognized conflict resolution program at a summer camp in Otisfield to try and dispel hatred and misconceptions since 1993, will receive a $30,000 cash donation from Peoples Bank. It will also benefit from fundraising opportunities valued at more than $40,000.

This year’s date for the 10K is Aug. 2 along the coast in Cape Elizabeth. The race field size will remain identical at 5,000 participants.

Now in its sixth year, the Beach to Beacon has grown into a top international road race, drawing runners from nine countries and 43 states last year.

The Seeds of Peace Maine project is a pilot program designed to address ethnic and racial tensions between diverse communities in the U.S.
