Genetic-ailments clinic scheduled in Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH – People who are suspicious that a medical problem runs in their family or wonder whether a particular medical problem could be inherited can participate in a genetics clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 25, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital.

The free clinic is being offered by the Center for Human Genetics in Bar Harbor.

Family medical problems that have been discussed in the past include many types of eye disease, diabetes, heart attacks at an early age and cystic fibrosis.

In addition, the clinic has been devoted to some familial diseases affecting behavior, such as manic-depressive disorder, autism and Huntington’s disease.

Local health professionals taking part in the clinics include: Dr. Robert Beekman, pediatrician; Dr. William Bromley, ophthalmologist; Thomas Roderick, geneticist; Susan Myers, educational consultant; and Dr. Melba Wilson, genetic counselor.

To participate, call the center at 288-5815 as soon as possible so that adequate medical records and family history can be obtained before the clinic. Late callers will be scheduled for the next clinic.
