An important bill before the Legislature is LD 937 “An Act to Improve Washington County’s Economy by Promoting Natural, Cultural and Heritage Tourism.” If passed, the bill will give this distressed region of our state a real chance to achieve a more prosperous economic future.
With declining opportunities in Washington County’s traditional strengths – abundant fisheries and forests – few would disagree that the region is struggling to meet the increasing challenges of rural economic development. After years of talking and planning, community and business leaders including the Passamaquoddy Tribe have rallied behind the concept of a regional heritage center that will act as a significant destination site to attract tourists to Washington County and promote small business development to serve them.
