Rodgerson, Cougars nip Pats

SHERMAN STATION – Tom Rodgerson buried four 3-pointers on his way to 15 points Thursday night as Katahdin of Sherman Station knocked off Bangor Christian 61-59 in schoolboy basketball action.

Brian Sullivan notched 14 points for Katahdin and Sam Cyr added 10.

David Chrisos sparked the Patriots of Bangor with 16 points. Josh Madden chipped in with 13, D.J. McCleary netted 12 and Ben Sobey added 11.

At East Millinocket Wednesday night, Tyler Thompson and Ryan Deschenes scored eight points each in the third quarter as Schenck outscored Penobscot Valley of Howland 24-13 to pull away.

Thompson and Mark Hanington finished with 15 points apiece, Deschenes had 12 and Brian Graham contributed 11. Aaron Waite had three three-pointers.

Matt Mulligan had a game-high 29 points for Penobscot Valley and Garrett Lavertu chipped in with 10.

At Bangor’s Sawyer Arena, junior right wing Kevin Cobb converted a Mike McPike pass with 2:30 remaining in the first period to decide an impressive goaltending duel between Cony High of Augusta junior Casey Tuttle and Bangor sophomore Aaron Buzzell.

Cobb took the pass from McPike entering the offensive zone, cut around a defenseman and avoided a Tuttle pokecheck before tucking a backhander between Tuttle’s left skate and the post.

Tuttle kept his team in the game in the first two periods when he made 19 of his 22 saves.

Buzzell came up with several gems in the third period, finishing with 11 of his 21 saves over the final 15 minutes.

Bangor is now 3-4 while Cony fell to 4-4.
