Orono High School football coach Wally Covell is among a group of 11 people who will be inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame at a banquet at the Spring Street Holiday Inn in Portland on July 20 beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Covell will be honored for his 45 years as a baseball coach at Orono and Lawrence high schools, Colby College, and the University of Southern Maine.
Also being inducted are Shirley “Slip” Corey, who founded the Brewer Little League in 1954, and Millinocket’s Bob Boynton, who was a three-sport star at Stearns High School and signed a baseball contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Bill Beam will be honored for his dominance as a pitcher for the Bar Harbor AA’s in the 1940s and his involvement in that town’s Little League.
Former Husson College baseball coach Del Merrill of Ellsworth will be inducted as will Norm Faucher of Biddeford, Herb Austin of Wilton, Saco’s Art Bishop, Gus Carmichael of Cumberland, Freeman Dalac of Portland, and William “Buck” Jordan, who played at Fryeburg Academy, the University of New Hampshire, and in the Northern New England League.
