Heather Ernest
Heather Ernest of the University of Maine has been named the America East Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week. The 6-foot-1 forward from Temple posted her sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season, averaging 22 points and 12.5 rebounds in two Black Bear victories. Ernest shared the honor with Stony Brook’s Sherry Jordan.
Travis Magnusson
University of Maine-Farmington freshman guard Travis Magnusson helped the Beavers go 2-1 last week by averaging 18.7 points and seven assists per game. The Thomaston native earned Webber Energy Sunrise Conference Rookie of the Week men’s basketball honors.
Dawan-Abdullah, Francoeur
Bilal Dawan-Abdullah of Saint Joseph’s College and Mike Francoeur from the University of Southern Maine were named Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches Association co-players of the week. Dawan-Abdullah averaged 23.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game in three victories while Francoeur averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals in a win and a loss.
Jason Harvey, Andy Jenkins
Andy Jenkins, a freshman from Gorham, averaged 11.3 points and five rebounds per game for Colby College last week, while Bucksport’s Jason Harvey averaged 10.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists for Husson College as both were named Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches Association rookies of the week.
Tiffany Jones
University of Southern Maine freshman Tiffany Jones was named the New England Women’s Basketball Association Division III Rookie of the Week for the third time. Jones averaged 28 points per game in two wins. She netted 16 of 18 free throws against UMass-Boston and was 27-for-32 at the free-throw line after the two games.
Katie Avener
Keene State College junior captain Katie Avener of Belfast was named as Little East Conference women’s diver of the week. Avener placed second in the 1-meter diving against Bridgewater and Bentley and was third in the 3-meter diving against Bentley.
Jimmy Howard
University of Maine freshman goaltender Jimmy Howard was honored as the Hockey East men’s rookie of the week. Howard made 69 saves in a two-game split against the University of New Hampshire.
