BANGOR – Two men arrested as part of an alleged drug ring based in Waterville and Fairfield have been indicted by a federal grand jury convened this month. Investigators said the case highlights the problem of more crack cocaine, heroin and other drugs making their way into central and northern Maine up the Interstate 95 corridor.

Donald Andrews, 23, of Waterville and Kevin Brown, 21, of New York, N.Y., were arrested in December with nearly 10 ounces of crack cocaine in one of the largest seizures of crack cocaine in the state, according to law enforcement officials. Both men are charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and with possession with intent to distribute.

If convicted, they could be sentenced to between 10 years and life in prison and-or fined up to $4 million. The two remain in custody.

Lawrence Bartlett, 57, of Stonington was indicted on similar but unrelated charges after he was arrested last month with an undisclosed amount of cocaine. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and-or a fine of up to $1 million. Bartlett is free on bail.

The grand jury also indicted William C. Szczesny, 50, of Plymouth and Ernest E. Brooks, 48, of Alton for knowingly making a written false statement on an application to purchase a firearm. If convicted, each man faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to the indictments, Szczesny was subject to an extended order for protection issued by the Newport District Court in 2002 and Brooks was convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence in 1997 in 13th District Court in Dover-Foxcroft. The indictments charge that the two lied when filling out applications to buy guns last year from two different federally licensed firearms dealers.

Katrina Boyce, 37, of Deer Isle was indicted on one count of embezzlement by a bank employee. She is charged with embezzling more than $1,000 from the Union Trust Co., which has seven locations in Hancock County.

If convicted, Boyce could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison and be fined $250,000.
