Trenkle helps Bowdoin women defeat Colby

WATERVILLE – Lora Trenkle led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears earned a 60-50 women’s basketball victory over the Colby College White Mules Saturday.

Courtney Trotta notched 12 points for Bowdoin of Brunswick. Alison Smith hauled down 11 rebounds and Kristi Royer had 10 rebounds to go with 10 points. Justine Pouravelis also scored 10.

Sarah Walsh led all scorers with 22 points for the White Mules.

UMFK splits two weekend games

At Fort Kent, UMFK split a pair of games this weekend, beating St. Joseph’s of Vermont 66-64 and losing to Lyndon State 65-44.

In the first game, Saturday, Heidi Fisher was the top scorer for UMFK with 21 points while Jessica Noyes tossed in 19.

Morgan Hytko led the scoring for College of St. Joseph’s with 25 points.

Heidi Fisher led the UM-Fort Kent effort with 13 points.

Women’s hockey

Northeastern, Maine split

At Boston, Karen Droog scored 1:59 into overtime as the Black Bears salvaged a split of their two-game series at Northeastern University with a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies won Saturday’s game 3-2.

Droog dug the puck out of a crowded goalmouth, turned and beat NU goalie Chanda Gunn.

Maine improved to 9-13-4 overall, 2-7-2 in Hockey East. NU fell to 9-17-2 and 4-9-1 in league play.

Maine goalie Lara Smart helped send the game into overtime by scrambling across her crease to rob Lori DiGiacomo with two minutes left and then making a pad save on Cyndy Kenyon’s breakaway 1:30 later.

Tristan Desmet staked Maine to a 1-0 lead on the power play 1:19 into the game but Kenyon equalized in the second period off assists from DiGiacomo and Rebecca Paul.

Laura Maddin assisted on both Maine goals with Nicole Munro and Jarin Sjogren collecting one apiece. Smart finished with 28 saves.

Gunn stopped 25 shots.

On Saturday, Kenyon scored the game-winner at 8:56 of the third period with an assist from Paul.

Kim Greene scored the first two goals for Northeastern while Brooke White had assists on each. Rebecca Peters recorded an assist while Gunn made 20 saves.

Meagan Aarts and Desmet scored the goals for Maine while Jarin Sjogren picked up two assists. Raffi Wolf had an assist while Dawn Froats stopped 26 shots.

Men’s basketball

At Providence, R.I., Johnafer White racked up 21 points and 13 rebounds and hit 12 of 14 free throws as Rhode Island College held off the Huskies Saturday.

Lester Carter tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winners.

Jason Levecque poured in a game-high 37 points to lead Southern Maine.

Bengals win two weekend games

At Fort Kent, UM-Fort Kent won both games of a double-header this weekend, defeating St. Joseph’s of Vermont 84-67 and Lyndon State 93-89 in overtime.

In the first game, Saturday, Bartas Samaitis led UMFK with 18 points while Bobby Thompson added 17. Stafford Bente helped out with 10 points.

Silas Carnes led College of St. Joseph’s with 25 points.

In the second game, Sunday, Samaitis scored 22 for UMFK while Andrew Clavette had 19 and Bente and Vladimir Khazanovich each added 12. Shawn Greshaw chipped in with 11 points.

Nick Baskwill led Lyndon State with 27 points.

MMA splits weekend

At Newton, Mass., Maine Maritime Academy came back to defeat Mount Ida on Sunday 72-62 behind 25 points and 23 rebounds from Jed Johnson after dropping an 83-73 decision to Lasell on Saturday.

Matt Clement chipped in with 18 points and Jon Newland added 10 for MMA on Sunday.

Johnson poured in 30 points and had 16 rebounds in Saturday’s loss while Clement added 26 points and Newland had 10.

Demitrike Dejesus paced Lasell with 23 points.
