Leeman, Smith propel Woodland past Lubec

BANGOR – The tendency for most top-seeded tourney teams is to take their quarterfinal opponent somewhat lightly.

When you’re the two-time defending state champion and No. 1 regional seed, that tendency would seem unavoidable … unless you’re the Woodland Dragons.

After barely beating No. 9 Lubec by a single point in overtime the last time they played, the 15-5 Dragons weren’t about to chance anything as they seized momentum early, overcame a sluggish second quarter, and posted a comfortable 56-37 Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal win over the Hornets Saturday night at the Bangor Auditorium.

Woodland used its’ 1-2 punch of juniors Kaitlyn Leeman and Katie Smith to overcome a solid effort by Leann Pike and the Hornets, who finish their season 12-8.

“We didn’t take them lightly today, no,” said Smith, who had 13 points and a game-high nine boards. “We had to come out strong and get rid of the nerves.”

Leeman led the Dragons, who move on to a 2:05 p.m. Thursday semifinal against the winner of today’s Limestone-Shead game, with a game-high 21 points. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.

After Woodland jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, Lubec used a 7-2 run to close out the second quarter and shrink its deficit to six points at halftime.

“Even though we’re a veteran team, so to speak, we’re a young veteran team,” said Woodland coach Arnold Clark. “The kids came out fairly well in the first quarter, but we were kind of flat in the second defensively.”

That didn’t continue into the second half, however, as the Dragons used a 15-3 run to go ahead 49-32 with 5:49 to play and never looked back.

“We already knew Lubec was a good team, but near misses are a warning,” Clark said. “It helped them focus more.”

Pike led Lubec with 15 points, eight boards, and three blocks. Senior guard Breanne McPherson had 16 points.
