Patterson powers Dexter Senior hits 1,500th point; Penquis next for Tigers

BANGOR – Dexter High School senior guard Travis Patterson entered Wednesday’s Eastern Maine Class C Tournament quarterfinal against Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln needing four points to reach 1,500 for his career.

It didn’t take him long as he orchestrated a 31-point performance that carried the Tigers to a 77-49 victory over the Lynx.

Fourth seed Dexter, 13-6, will face No. 1 Penquis of Milo, 17-2, in Friday’s 8:35 p.m. semifinal at the Bangor Auditorium.

Patterson’s 59th consecutive double-digit performance featured 23 first-half points as Dexter used its superior quickness and shooting to rattle off a decisive 29-6 spurt.

In manufacturing a 52-27 halftime lead, Dexter shot 62.1 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent from the foul line.

“This was one of our best games of the season,” said Patterson, who went 7-for-11 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the foul line in the first half. “Everyone was pumped up. We made our shots. We knew they had an advantage inside a little bit but we knew if we boxed out and played quick, we could handle that.”

The Lynx stayed in a man-to-man but nobody could match up with Patterson, who used his quickness to drive the lane or work himself free for outside jumpers.

“I was a little bit surprised. I thought they might try a box-and-one or a double team on me,” said Patterson. “They laid off me and I had some easy shots.”

“I thought we could handle him better than we did,” said Mattanawcook coach Ron Weatherbee. “He did a great job. They set some screens to get him open and, defensively, we made it too easy for him and their other guys.

“They seemed quicker than they were in our two regular season games [that they split]. They seemed a step ahead of us on most everything,” added Weatherbee, who was without senior guard and primary outside shooting threat Nathan Cousineau (broken wrist).

“That hurt them a lot. He was a big contributor for them,” said Patterson.

Chris Rabideau and Mike Martin combined for 15 Dexter points and Rabideau grabbed seven rebounds.

The 12-7 Lynx, who were plagued by foul trouble in the tightly-officiated game, received 19 points from senior center Jon Carney and seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds from junior center Wayne Berry.
