Pittsfield police probe spate of break-ins

PITTSFIELD – Police are investigating two local break-ins early Thursday, one at Richie’s Pizza in Pittsfield and the other at The Maine Store in Detroit.

Pittsfield Officer Larry Minoty said the front door glass at Richie’s Pizza on South Main Street was kicked in about 1:15 a.m. and an alarm alerted authorities.

Minoty said only about $40 worth of merchandise was taken but more than $300 damage was done to the front door. The burglar took two 12-packs of beer and four packages of cigarettes, dropping some of that on the way out of the store.

In Detroit, The Maine Store owner James Basford reported that someone attempted to pry open the front door just before 1 a.m.

“We had the alarm system upgraded about three weeks ago and when it went off, apparently they didn’t like it,” Basford said. No entry was gained but, Basford said, this was the third time in two months the store had been hit. Burglars entered the store the other two times.

Somerset County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Cunningham is investigating the attempted break.

Pittsfield police also are investigating the theft of $300 from A.E. Robinson on Somerset Avenue in Pittsfield.
