BANGOR – The former head of a now defunct hairstyling academy with a location in Brewer was sentenced in federal court this week to one month in prison and five months of home confinement for failing to refund the student loans of 15 former students.

Jeffrey P. Saleeby, 44, of Scarborough also was ordered to make restitution of $13,433 to the Finance Authority of Maine and was fined $2,000. He also will face three years of supervised release. The sentence was issued by U.S. District Judge George Singal on Wednesday.

Saleeby pleaded guilty on Sept. 26, 2002, to one count of failure to make student loan refunds between March 8, 1997, and July 8, 1997. It was at that time the Maine State Academy of Hair Design suddenly closed the doors at its campuses in Lewiston, Waterville, Portland and Brewer. More than 116 students were affected by the closure.
