Law Day Essay Contest
BANGOR – The Penobscot County Bar Association is sponsoring the 2003 Law Day Essay Contest with scholarships to be awarded: first, $500; second, $250; third, $100; two honorable mentions, $50 each.
The contest is open to all high school seniors, or equivalent, in Penobscot County. The theme is, “Celebrate Your Freedom: Independent Courts Protect Our Liberties.”
Essays must be typed, double spaced, and no more than 500 words long. Eligible participants are 12th grade high school students who are residents of Penobscot County.
Essays must include student’s name, address, phone number, high school and principal or equivalent, student’s age and certification as a 12th-grader.
Essays should be postmarked no later than April 11. Mail essays to: Law Day Essay Contest, Penobscot County Bar Association, c/o Marie Hansen, P.O. Box 924, Bangor 04402-0924. Winners will be announced May 1.
Brewer registration
BREWER – Kindergarten registration for Brewer children who will be 5 years old on or before Oct. 15 will be held 4:30-7 p.m. March 19, at Capri Street School.
Parents must bring their child’s official birth certificate, immunization records and Social Security number. No appointment is necessary and it is not necessary for children to attend. For information, call Capri Street School at 989-8620.
Carmel-Levant registration
CARMEL – Families of children who will be registering for prekindergarten or kindergarten in Carmel or Levant should call the schools by March 14. Call 848-3383 for the Carmel school and 884-7444 for the Levant school. Children must be 5 years old by Oct. 15 to register for kindergarten, and 4 before Oct. 15 to register for prekindergarten.
Developmental screening
HERMON – A free developmental screening for all area 3- and 4-year-old children, as well as 5-year-olds not yet eligible for kindergarten, will be held for the Hermon School Department from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 13, at Hermon Elementary School, Billings Road. To schedule an appointment, call Child Development Services at 947-8493, Ext. 10 or 17.
Milford registration
MILFORD – Kindergarten registration for children who will be 5 years old on or before Oct. 15 begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, in the kindergarten rooms at the Libby School.
Due to registration, kindergarten students will not attend school on that day only.
Parents must bring their child’s original birth certificate and immunization records. An appointment is required. Call 827-2252 as soon as possible.

Eastern Maine Technical College
BANGOR – The board of trustees of Eastern Maine Technical College has granted approval to offer a new associate’s degree in science in civil engineering technology. The program, which will begin this fall, is receiving support from businesses in the area and around Maine. Ten companies have committed to provide financial support, said EMTC President Joyce Hedlund.
