Hurricanes, MDI swimmers shine

The Hurricane Swim Club turned in some top efforts during the recent USA Swimming 8 and Under Championships at Cape Elizabeth where it captured the combined team title for boys and girls.

The MDI YMCA swim team collected the boys title while the Hurricanes, which is based at the Bangor-Brewer YWCA, took the girls crown.

Meri Wicks and Mariah Reading helped spark the Hurricanes in the girls events. Reading placed first in the 50-meter freestyle along with seconds in the 25 backstroke, 25 free, and 100 individual medley. She also placed third in the 100 free and 25 breaststroke.

Wicks picked up seconds in the 100 free and 25 fly and thirds in the 25 back, 25 free and 100 IM.

Josh Williams sparked the Hurricane boys with seconds in the 25 fly and 100 IM and a third in the 25 free while teammate Tyler LaPlante finished first in the 25 breaststroke.

MDI’s Benjamin Walls turned in a strong effort with seconds in the 100 free and 50 free along with fourths in the 25 fly, 25 breaststroke, 25 free and 100 IM.
