Rams to battle Cheverus at 7:05 p.m.

Two teams that somewhat mirror each other, at least in attitude, will meet tonight for the Class A boys state championship.

Cheverus of Portland and Bangor will square off at the Bangor Auditorium beginning at 7:05 p.m.

The 19-2 Stags won the Western Maine title with an 87-55 rout of Edward Little of Auburn while the Rams (20-1) pulled off a 62-48 upset of previously unbeaten and defending state champion Brunswick.

Bangor coach Roger Reed will be seeking the school’s sixth boys state championship since he took over the team in 1985.

Cheverus won its last state championship in 1997. The Stags lost in the 1998 title game to Skowhegan.

Both have Mr. Maine Basketball finalists in Cheverus’ Jeff Holmes and Bangor’s Zak Ray, but both are far more than one-man teams.

The Rams sent what Cheverus coach Bob Brown referred to as “shock waves” throughout Maine high school basketball circles with their win over Brunswick.

Bangor turned in the consummate team defensive performance in that victory. With senior Wesley Day providing primary coverage and a teammate at every turn, the Rams managed to hold Brunswick’s explosive junior Ralph Mims to only 11 points.

The Rams will look for the 6-foot-1 Day to provide scoring. They look to Ray for leadership and intensity. Sophomore Aaron Gallant has shown the ability to carry the team at times, and sophomore shooting guard Jordan Heath can keep zone defenses honest with his long-range shooting.

The Rams will also count on 6-3 senior Kevin Flynn to try to counter the Stags’ size advantage.

“I know they’re a big team. It will probably be different from what we experienced against Nokomis and Brunswick with more half-court,” Reed said.

Reed’s Rams will, as usual, be facing a taller team. Holmes, at 6-5, provides strength and scoring inside, averaging 17.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Point guard Austin DeAngelis was the Stags’ leading scorer last year. This year he plays the point and runs the show while averaging 12 ppg. Andrew Ward at 6-3, Andrew Schober (6-2), and Mac Simpson (6-0) round out the Cheverus starting five.

It is a team that Brown said has transformed itself over the course of the year.

“I think that our team has evolved in that in the beginning we had two players [Holmes and DeAngelis]. Now we have five,” Brown said.

Both teams have a defense-first philosophy and will push the ball if the opening is there, but they are also content to run their half-court offense. And Brown, like Reed, expects the game to come down to the final minutes.

“Bangor’s not going to beat themselves. They never have and they never will,” Brown said.
