Aroostook County
Benedicta 3/12: With warm temperatures prevailing, the trails are really taking a beating. Both of the Snowgang groomers are operating on regular schedule, with all trails still in great shape at this point in time. Trail report is as follows:
ITS 81, Sherman, Mattawamkeag Cutoff: groomed, with excellent conditions.
ITS 83, Sherman, Whetstone Falls: groomed, with good/excellent conditions.
Municipal Trail 70, Benedicta, Whetstone Falls: groomed, with awesome conditions.
Madawaska, St. John Valley 3/11: This is certainly a record-setting winter in terms of snowfall and cold temperatures. The trails are in excellent condition.
The Frenchville trails are well-kept and folks are going all the way over to the Allagash, where many deer can be seen munching on buds along the river banks. Fort Kent to Eagle Lake and over to St. Agatha are excellent during the week when traffic is lower.
Sherman 3/11: The trails are in excellent shape and it is now early March. A fresh 10 inches or more have fallen since March began, and more is on the way.
Aroostook Report from Caribou Rec. 3/12: All trails lead to Portage Friday and Saturday for the Portage Lakes Spring Fling and contrary to rumors all projects are still grooming. Warm temperatures will break up the snow somewhat so sledders should expect choppy conditions everywhere around the County as temperatures rise over the weekend.
Extended cold is helping to hold hard ice on rivers and streams so sledders should not have any problems with ice conditions anywhere in the area.
Safety is another issue to deal with this weekend. Nice weather will bring out lots of traffic, so to save trail conditions and to save lives, please ride right, reduce speed and avoid fast stops and starts.
Katahdin region
Millinocket area 3/10: If you are not riding in the Katahdin Region this week you are missing out on great midwinter riding conditions. The riding up here is unbelievable with light traffic.
We should have great riding through the end of the month and plan to keep grooming until no one wants to ride anymore. Grooming continues on an as-need basis and our trails are in excellent shape. The warm weather this past weekend added a little needed moisture to our snow and trails groomed Sunday night set up extremely well.
Piscataquis, Penobscot
Charleston 3/12: The continuing cold conditions have kept the Charleston trails in terrific shape all week. All trails were groomed at least three times this past week, and grooming will continue until warmer weather sets in to stay. It’s forecast to be near 50 by this Sunday, this could possibly be the beginning of the end.
All trail surfaces are smooth but are hard and icy in the morning, slider lubrication may be a problem until it loosens up in the sun. Note that with the warming temps, there will be more and more water holes appearing in the trails this weekend, something we haven’t had to deal with all winter. Road crossings and any plowed trails will also get muddy early in the day.
ITS 83 South of the village to the Corinth line is groomed and smooth, but with heavy traffic and warmer weather forecast, it will get rough later in the day. The Powerline/ITS bypass and Bradford Connector trails are groomed and in good condition also, but expect thin spots here and there on the Powerline due to its north-south direction.
ITS 83 North is in excellent condition, and flat for the most part. The Dover/85 connector is also in good shape on the Charleston end. The Hudson connector will be rough on the far east end due to poor groomer access.
Brownville 3/11: All of the trails are in excellent shape with the exception of the Beech Ridge trail. We have shut down the trail due to logging activity there. It is just too dangerous to send people through the logging operation with the harvesters working in and among the trail.
All other trails are in great shape. Be careful of the groomers out at night and during the day. Match your speed to how far ahead you can see and we will all be safe. There is a patch of ice that is forming on the railbed to K.I. Watch yourself here.
Moosehead region
Greenville 3/10: We have great riding in the Greenville area – some of the best this winter. Our trails are holding up well so far and will as long as the cold temperatures continue. The days when the temperatures rise into the 30s and 40 we are beginning to see that the snow gets mushy on the surface.
Our grooming schedule remains on a nightly basis on the ITS for as long as the snow continues to hold up. The club trails are being dragged twice a week and will probably hold up longer than the ITS system as the warm temperatures approach.
Route 201 corridor
Jackman, Moose River Area 3/13: The trails continue to be in good condition to date. There are no problems or changes to report.
ITS 86 To Pittston Farm & Rockwood: excellent
ITS 89 North to Canada: excellent
ITS 89 South to the Forks & Parlin: Very good
In town: good
The Forks 3/11: We currently have anywhere from 30 to 48 inches of snow on the ground, depending on the exact location.
The ITS Connector Trail from Berry’s Store to ITS 87 is in good shape.
ITS 87 north to Greenville, Moosehead Lake is in excellent condition, including the Power Line sections.
ITS 87 south toward Bingham is in excellent shape.
The ITS Connector Trail from Berry’s Store to ITS 89 is currently in good condition.
ITS 89 southwest toward Grand Falls, Eustis is in very good shape.
ITS 89 north to Coburn Mountain, Jackman has a ton of snow and good riding.
The ITS Connector Trail from Berry’s Store north to Parlin Pond and on to ITS 86 is in excellent shape.
The Pleasant Pond Loop club trail is groomed and in excellent condition.
Central Maine
Pittsfield 3/13: We’re still riding. Dragging three times a week now is working well. Riding in the evening when the trails are cooler has been nice this week.
Sabattus 3/11: Our trails are holding up very well. Grooming is ongoing.
Albion 3/10: After a warmup this weekend we are back in the deep freeze. We’ll take it. Conditions remain excellent on all of our trail system. ITS 85 was done Monday and is incredible, hard and flat. All trails will continue to be groomed as long as we can stay on them.
Manchester 3/10: Trail conditions are awesome, what more can I say. We still have several areas being logged, please pay attention to the signs.
Winslow 3/10: Trails in the Winslow area took some abuse over the weekend, they saw a lot of traffic, but with cold temps Monday night we should be able to get things back to great conditions again.
