PITTSFIELD – Even before Thursday night’s recreation meeting began, Pittsfield Town Manager Kathryn Ruth said she had received more than 10 telephone calls from residents wishing to volunteer.
“Everything from a Twilight League for children in Hathorn Park to jazz groups to a skateboard park,” said Ruth. “Some of the local businesses called and want to work with the town. There are an amazing amount of resources out there.”
The meeting Thursday was called to organize on one comprehensive list all the recreational opportunities being offered. “Some are offered by the town, some by schools, some by private people,” said Ruth. “We just need to connect these all together.”
Ruth explained that the town is revamping its recreation department to a year-round, part-time position, rather than the summer position it has been for the past several years. With a $40,000 budget, Ruth said, the town will advertise for a recreation director this summer, hoping the $5,000 salary will attract someone excited about new programming.
Currently the town only offers swimming, basketball, soccer, tennis, and arts and crafts, mostly for children. The Town Council has asked that the program be expanded to serve more of the town’s residents.
By creating an inventory of programs offered throughout the community, Ruth said, duplication can be avoided.
The small group of attendees had several suggestions for additional programs, such as computer workshops for children, digital filmmaking and editing for teens, community theater and expanded arts programming for children.
Abby Ring, community partnership director at Sebasticook Valley Hospital, is coordinating the program with Ruth.
