UMF Beavers nip Mules by the skin of their teeth

WATERVILLE – The University of Maine-Farmington was outhit 9-4, but junior pitcher Jeff Casavant of Biddeford was able to work out of some jams and help the Beavers hold off the White Mules 4-3 Wednesday for their first baseball win of the season.

The Beavers scored once in the second inning, twice in the third, and added a key insurance run in the fifth. John Rukiewicz pitched the eighth and ninth to earn a save.

Tom Ventura doubled, walked twice, and scored a run for UMF. Dave Sharland singled and scored twice.

Kevin Brunelle of Augusta helped lead the Mules with two singles and a run. Another Cony alumnus, B.L. Lippert, had a single and a double.

Southern Maine 12, Bowdoin 10

At Gorham, Adam Lemieux’s two-run home run in the sixth inning led the University of Southern Maine to a come-from-behind win over Bowdoin.

Lemieux also had a single and freshman outfielder Josh Watkins had a home run, a single, and four RBIs. Tyler Delorme had three singles and an RBI while Brian Marshall added two singles.

Tom McMahon hit a two-run homer in the third, a double, and two singles. John Clifford had a double and three singles.

MMA, Thomas split

At Castine, Maine Maritime Academy split a doubleheader with Thomas College, winning the second game 6-5 after losing a 4-3 decision in the first.

In the second game, Thomas led the game 4-1 in the bottom, but the Mariners tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Mariners won with a run in the seventh as Janice Spear walked and stole second, went to third on a bunt, and then scored on Jessica Clifford’s sacrifice fly. Spear notched the win despite yielding 10 hits.

Brindi Riley and Dee Kelly each had a single and a triple. Riley drove in a run and Kelly drove in two. Lawrence High alumna Jen Lane had two singles and an RBI.

In the first game, the Terriers were down 3-2 heading into the seventh, but after Joy Ireland led off with a walk and pinch-runner Brielle Daggett was sacrificed to second and third, Riley singled her home. Riley then stole second and scored on a fielding error.

Ireland notched the win with a 14-strikeout effort. She also yielded eight hits and eight walks.

Clifford and Abbi Darling each had two hits and an RBI. Hillary Arris pitched a two-hitter, singled twice, and stole two bases for the Mariners.
