Mainville, McLean power Huskies to three wins

GORHAM – Sarah McLean scored the game-winning run on a passed ball as the University of Southern Maine softball team picked up a 3-2 win Sunday over Western Connecticut the first game of a college doubleheader. Western Connecticut won the second game 5-2.

In the first game, McLean homered, doubled and finished with two RBIs to lead USM. Cherie Bailey hit three singles for Western Connecticut.

In the second game, Melissa Walsh tripled to knock in two runs for Western Connecticut. Jordan Gatcomb hit an RBI double for Southern Maine.

Southern Maine takes two

At Gorham Saturday, USM pitchers gave up just four hits and no runs in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

In the first game, Katie Mainville scattered two hits while striking out 12 for Southern Maine. Renee Heath hit an RBI double. Amanda Tavares and Lauren Johnson singled for UMass-Dartmouth.

In the second game, Melissa Henderson allowed two hits while fanning seven. Tasha Jackson hit a two-run double in the fifth inning.

USM sweeps Castleton State

At Gorham Saturday, Andy Lang tripled, doubled, singled and knocked in a run to lead the Huskies to a 4-1 win over Castleton State in the first game of a doubleheader. USM got a 4-2 victory in the second.

In the opener, Ryan Johnston gave up five hits and one run through seven innings for USM. Tyler Delorme had two RBIs. Jason Harrington hit an RBI single for Castleton State.

In the second game, Brian Marshall’s RBI double highlighted a three-run first inning for the Huskies. Mike Wiseman tripled and singled for Castleton State.

Trinity sweeps Colby

At Waterville Sunday, Eric Shatternkirk hit three home runs to help Trinity to a 19-9 win over the White Mules in the second game. Trinity won the first game 5-1.

In the opener, Kurt Piantek homered for Trinity and Robert Dolliver hit a double. Brandon Royce smacked a home run for Colby and Matt Gibson doubled.

In the second game, Jayme Dorr, Kurt Piantek, and Andrew Fries of Trinity hit one home run apiece. Matt Gibson and Dan Deacon each hit a pair of doubles for Colby.

St. Joseph’s wins two

At Standish, designated hitter Jake Rodden drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to give St. Joseph’s a 6-5 win over Castleton (Vt.) State College Sunday.

The Monks then went on to beat UMass-Boston 4-3 in their second game of the day.

The Monks rallied for four runs in the fifth inning against Castleton as Derek McIntosh hit a two-run homer, Jesse LaCasse had an RBI double and Ben Muniz an RBI single.

Andy Exley drove in two runs and doubled for the Monks in the second game.
