FALMOUTH – Maine has the potential to generate nearly all of its electricity needs from wind, environmentally clean biomass plants and the sun, according to a report released Wednesday.

The report, by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, says that increasing the use of renewable energy resources would create jobs, boost the economy, cut pollution and create a more stable market for energy. Maine now derives 42 percent of its power from coal, petroleum and gas, according to the report.

PIRG, a national public advocacy group with more than 2,000 members in Maine, released the report at the Maine Audubon Gilsland Farm Environmental Center, which uses geothermal and solar energy to power its office.
