Brown takes two from Black Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jeff Nichols hit a solo home run with two out in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s first game, sparking Brown University to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine.

Brown won the opener 5-4, then took the nightcap 6-2.

Brown now has beaten UMaine in each of the 16 meetings between the two programs. Prior to Wednesday, the two had not met on the baseball diamond since 1969.

The Black Bears slip to 19-9 heading into an important America East series against Northeastern that begins Friday at 4 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

Brown improved to 10-20-1.

In Game 1, Nichols homered off UMaine reliever Adam Labelle in the seventh to give the hosts the winning margin.

Justin Lebowitz fired a three-hitter for Brown, striking out eight. He surrendered a two-run home run to Aaron Izaryk in the second inning and Joe Drapeau’s two-run shot in the sixth.

Matt Kutler paced Brown with a two-run homer in the fifth and an RBI single in the third. Jeff Nichols hit a solo homer and a single.

Freshman Troy Martin allowed three hits and two runs in his four-inning stint for the Black Bears.

In Game 2, Nichols and Kutler stroked run-scoring singles during a three-run first inning that gave Brown all the runs it would need.

Shaun McNamara pitched four shutout innings for the hosts, who collected 11 hits. Nichols doubled and singled with two RBIs and Kutler singled twice with two RBIs.

Aaron Izaryk led the way for UMaine with three singles, including RBI hits in the fifth and seventh innings. Brett Ouellette provided two singles.

Freshman Brett Rogers suffered the loss, lasting only one-third of an inning.
