Ice-out should mean clear paddling for Meduxnekeag race

HOULTON – There were a few concerns last week about ice in Green Pond, which forms part of the race course for Saturday’s 27th Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race. That problem was solved last Friday when the ice went out of the pond.

“There should be a good swath down through there,” said Peter Blood of Houlton, one of the race organizers, Monday.

Registration for people who do not preregister will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the Wellington Farm on Station Road in New Limerick. The race will get under way at 10 a.m., with canoes and kayaks starting at one-minute intervals.

The 8-mile race will end at the Highland Avenue Bridge in Houlton near the public boat landing.

At the conclusion of the race, awards and door prizes will be presented at the Gentle Memorial Building in Houlton.

Cost of the race is $10 per person, with proceeds to benefit the Houlton-Hodgdon Dollars for Scholars program. Registration includes a race T-shirt and free lunch at the finish area.

To preregister, call Blood at 532-2577.
