BURLINGTON, Vt. – Lauren Dulkis belted a double in the top of the fifth to drive in Nicole Taylor and provide the winning run in the University of Maine softball team’s 3-1 victory over Vermont in the first game of a Monday doubleheader. The Catamounts won the second game 4-1.

Maine goes to 8-8 in America East play and currently sits in third place in the conference standings. The top four seeds make the AE tournament, which starts May 8.

In the first game, Brittany Cheney hit a single to drive in Dulkis and provide an insurance run for Maine. Jenna Merchant scattered six hits, struck out five and walked three. Jess Brady singled twice for the Bears. Kelli Miller had an RBI single for the Catamounts.

In the second game, Vermont’s Angie Totaro singled twice and drove in a run. Amy Kuhl paced Maine with a double and a single. Brady added two singles.

UM-Farmington sweeps Fisher

At Farmington, University of Maine-Farmington pitchers Lauren Stacey and Jessica Wenckus limited Fisher College to four total hits as the Beavers swept a doubleheader 24-0 and 17-1.

In the first game, Richelle Dube had a triple, double, single and two RBIs to lead the Beavers’ offense. Stacey (7-4) pitched a two-hitter.

In the second game, Dorice Reitchel had two doubles, three singles and five RBIs to pace UMF while Wenckus threw a two-hitter.

Fisher, UMPI split

At the Winkin Baseball Complex in Bangor, sophomore righthander Ben Goodwin held Fisher of Boston to five hits to give the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls their first Sunrise Conference win of the season, a 6-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader.

Fisher, now 9-9 in the league, won the first game 10-2.

Goodwin struck out two and allowed only one walk for UMPI, now 1-15 in the league. Chris Carlton sent in UMPI’s first run on a suicide squeeze.

Josh Berry and Greg Ingalls each added two-run singles.

In the first game, Victor Joaquin went 5-for-5 for Fisher with five singles and four RBIs while Mike Lane, Matt Bouchard and Berry each singled for UMPI.

Husson splits with Thomas

At Waterville, Husson split a doubleheader with Thomas, losing the first game 12-7 in eight innings then coming back to win the nightcap 11-1.

In the first game, Lance Hanes smacked a three-run homer for Thomas and Sean Brawn had a home run and an RBI single. Ryan O’Connor contributed a home run and three singles while Aaron Bonenfant hit two singles and Corey Pelletier added a three-run double.

Jason Folsom hit a home run and a double for Husson and Jason Harvey had two doubles and a single. Justin Spencer chipped in with two singles.

In the second game, Spencer nailed a grand slam and a solo homer and Josh Ferguson had a single, a double and a triple for Husson. Jason Harvey hit a double and a single while Billy Kane added two singles.

Bonenfant and Brawn each doubled for Thomas.

UMF sweeps Lyndon State

At Farmington, John Rutkiewicz pitched a three-hitter in five innings to help UMaine-Farmington beat Lyndon State (Vt.) in the second game of a doubeheader 11-1 to gain a sweep.

UMF won the first game 17-7.

James Writer and Eric Cummings paced UMF in the second game with a double and single apiece and Zach Reed tripled.

Matt Durso and Jared Carlson each doubled for Lyndon.

Justin Quimby sparked UMF in the first game as he drove in four runs with a double and two singles. Dustin Armitage added a double and single.

Greg Rose hit a home run for Lyndon.

At Standish, Sam Handy scattered five hits in six innings to give the University of Southern Maine a 6-2 win in the second game to salvage a split of a doubleheader.

St. Joe’s won the first game 11-7.

Tip Fairchild paced USM in the second game with three RBIs and two singles and Colin Loveless added a double, single and two RBIs.

Jesse LaCasse singled twice for St. Joe’s.

Jake Rodden sparked St. Joe’s in the first game as he drove in four runs with a home run and a single. Lucas Hannigan chipped in with a homer, two singles and two RBIs.

Brian Marshall led USM with four RBIs on a homer and two singles.
