Yard sale to benefit historic 1-room schoolhouse

Take a trip down Route 46 and stop by the yard and bake sale 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Duck Cove Community Club of Bucksport. The event benefits the historic “Little Yellow Schoolhouse” built in 1894, the only remaining one-room schoolhouse in Bucksport that is in its original condition and on the National Register of Historic Places, according to Phyllis Wardwell.

The community clubraises money to maintain the building that was used until 1944, Wardwell said. “This year, the club is in need of finances for much needed repairs” to windows and the chimney.

Donations, she emphasized, “are always welcome, as well as visitors.”

The lineup for the Center Drive School Parent-Teacher Group’s annual spring fair is pretty impressive. The fair, set to be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, rain or shine, at the school in Orrington, boasts new features with representatives of the Eastern Maine Medical Center Move & Improve program, Bangor Tae Kwon Do, Eastern Maine Matsumura Seito Karate and Brewer Parks & Recreation Department summer programs.

A Velcro wall and triceratops bounce are among the new games and for a suggested donation of $10, Portland Glass will repair your windshield dings.

Shop for Mother’s Day among many booths, take a chance on a variety of raffles, enjoy exhibits from Curran Homestead and the Orrington Volunteer Fire Department, and find just about anything you want to eat.

Ronnie Miller is president and Sue Pate vice president of the PTG that raises funds to benefit all CDS pupils.

Robinson Ballet Company is holding its first annual garage sale for two days at three sites.

The sale is 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, at 1010 Buck Hill Drive in Veazie, 31 Catell St. in Bangor and on Route 1A in Holden between Miller’s General Store and G & M Variety Store.

To contribute items for the sale, call 942-1990 and arrange for pickup.

Area residents and visitors are invited to a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the art galleries of the University of Maine in Machias.

The reception features works of more than 25 Washington County artists, displays from the Down East Heritage Center and short performances by local musicians and storytellers.

Stephanie Clement is chairwoman of the Vacationland Resources Committee, which is holding the free event for people to learn more about local art and artists.

Members of Hope Lutheran Church in Bangor are in the third year of their “Totes of Hope” community program.

Project chairwoman Rebecca Reeve reminds readers the tote bags are filled with books, toys, crafts and more, and are given to ill children in the pediatric unit of Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

To help support this project, the church is holding its third annual spaghetti supper beginning at 5 p.m. (with a final seating at 5:45 p.m.) at the church, 1520 Union St., Bangor.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and a maximum $17 for immediate family members. The event also includes a silent auction.

Laura Hoovler of the United Way of Eastern Maine reminds residents the program’s fourth annual citywide cleanup begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, and concludes with a free barbecue at 11 a.m. at Stillwater Park on Howard Street in Bangor.

The event is for all Camp Bangor scholarship recipients, their families and members of the public.

Participants meet at one of several parks where litter bags and latex gloves will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring work gloves.

Team leaders will greet you at Broadway Park, Brown Woods, Doughty Park, Downeast School, the downtown area, Essex Woods, Fairmount Park, Hayford Park, Kenduskeag Stream Walk, Little City Park, Mary Snow School, Parkwoods Housing, Prentice Woods or Stillwater Park.

The Hyssons gospel singers will perform after a baked bean supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road in Orrington.
