State winners honored for DAR essay contests

PORTLAND – State winners in the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen program and American history and Christopher Columbus essay contests were honored during the organization’s annual conference April 25 and 26.

The state-winning Good Citizen is Joy M. Longfellow of Farmingdale. She is the daughter of Walter and Pamela Longfellow and attends Hall-Dale High School.

Jennifer D. Brown of Monticello was the second-place winner. She is the daughter of Thomas and Barbara Brown and attends Houlton High School.

Sara Rafuse of Montville was the third-place winner. She is the daughter of William and Elizabeth Rafuse and attends Mount View High School in Thorndike.

Pupils in grades five to eight participated in the American history essay contest. This year’s topic was “A Letter from Valley Forge: Winter, 1777-1778.”

Winners were:

. Grade eight, first place, Jonathan Pike of Corinth, Bangor Christian School; second, Therese Couture of Waterville, home-schooled; third, Ashley Hibbard of Old Orchard Beach.

. Grade seven, first, Peter Swegart of Rome; second, Jillian French of Glenburn, Bangor Christian School; third, Nathaniel Simpson of Whiting.

. Grade six, first, Mary Couture of Waterville, home-schooled; second, Brian Carville of Augusta, St. Mary’s School; third, Alexandra Sullivan of Penobscot.

. Grade five, first, Kristin Dillon of Exeter, Exeter Consolidated School; second, Timothy Smith of Glenburn; third, Santina Snow of Waterville.

In addition, winners were announced for the Christopher Columbus essay contest, with the topic, “How did the voyages of Christopher Columbus express the general political, social and scientific outlook of the fifteenth century?”

State winner was Amanda Richard of Parsonsfield, a sophomore in high school. Second was Daniel Swegart of Rome.
