Shaw rolls to win in 50-lap race Consistency a key at 95

HERMON – Hermon’s Alex Shaw knew where he wanted to be during the 50-lap Super Street feature at Speedway 95 Sunday afternoon.

And once he got there, the race was his.

“The biggest thing is I knew I had to get the car going on the bottom [groove]. We played around with the adjustments and got it so it went on the bottom. That’s the only way to go, really,” said Shaw about his second straight win.

Shaw started fourth but took the lead for good when pole-sitter Jeff Bean got tangled up in lapped traffic on lap 14.

Shaw’s eventual margin of victory was 30 car-lengths over Bean with Hermon’s Steve Moulton taking third.

“Alex had a pretty strong car. He had a little more coming off the corner than I did,” said Bean. “I was pushing a little toward the end of it.”

It was the first in a three-race Super Street series.

In the 35-lap Pro Stock race, Ellsworth’s Andy Saunders led from wire-to-wire and held off Hermon’s Dale Swoboda by 11/2 car lengths. Glenburn’s Don Alexander Jr. finished third.

“Being up front is everything,” said Saunders. “If he [Swoboda] had been ahead of me [at the start], you probably would have seen just the opposite. He was probably a little quicker but I was where I needed to be so we pulled it off. I was very happy with the way the car went. The inside groove here is very hard and if you can make that work, you’ve done something.”

Swoboda said he could have pulled up alongside Saunders on the inside, but “I had a push going in and I just couldn’t stay with him. I could have run all over him outside but it was either dump him or follow him and I chose to follow.”

The 25-lap Limited Sportsman class saw Hudson’s Mike Thayer pass Farmington’s Mike Pepin on the outside on a restart with five laps to go and then hold off Pepin on a restart one lap later.

Thayer beat Pepin by four car-lengths. Milford’s Rob Brideau was third.

“The car ran real good. Last week, we had some trouble with the engine but we went home and fixed all the problems, hopefully,” said Thayer. “I thought he had me [on the last restart]. I really did. The inside was a little slick, especially on the last caution, but [staying on the inside groove] really paid off.”

Pepin said, “I had more than him until the last time [restart]. For some reason, I got way loose. The speedy dry [used to dry the track] messed us up a little bit. But I’m pleased to finish second.”

Colin Arey Sr. of Greenville won the Sport Four class by 12 car-lengths over Milford’s Jason Dorr. Carmel’s Barry Elston was third.

“The car was very good all day,” said Arey.

Corinna’s Andy Migliore, who has returned to racing after a one-year absence, captured the Strictly Street event. Lee’s Erik Worster was second and Winterport’s Mike Lynch was third.

Boothbay High School junior Corey Williams cruised to an impressive win in his mini-1934 Ford Sedan in the Maine Legends division followed by Rich Doughty of West Boylston, Mass., and Wally Silva Jr. of Scarborough.

Orrington’s Jay Robichaud won his second straight Mini-Truck division race followed by the other two entrants: Milbridge’s Roger Chipman and Hermon’s Bub Wilcox.
