HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD

Brewer’s Clark smashes records Hodgins, Alford, King also turn in top performances at meet

BREWER – While some boys and girls were tripling, others were doubling, setting records … or both. And then there were others just hoping to make it to the track on time.

Individually, Brewer’s Sarah Hodgins, Orono’s Olivia Alford, and Hermon’s John King were the big winners in the six-way track and field meet at Pendleton Street Complex Friday afternoon. Team-wise, the Brewer Witches were as both the boys and girls teams came away with dominant victories.

Oh, and even though she had only two individual wins, Brewer senior Heather Clark had a day to remember as she broke school records in the 800-meter run and two-mile (3200), a track record in the 800, and fell just .49 seconds short of the track record in the 3200 as well.

Clark, who is attending Florida State University on an athletic scholarship next fall, cruised around the all-weather track on a sunny, breezy day with a time of 2:21.98 in the 800 and 11:18.73 in the 3200.

“I think the best I’d done in the 800 was 2:24 or something like that from my sophomore year,” said Clark, who was unable to contain her broad grin. “My old 3200 best time was 11:24.something last week, so yeah, I’m really happy and excited about my times today.”

So too must be her future coaches in FSU Seminoles Land, who are helping to motivate Clark as she keeps “trying to run faster and knocking their socks off.”

Clark and her 16 teammates scored 139 points to outpace the runner-up Hermon girls, who scored 90.

“We’ve had some injuries and some other situations come up where we only have about 17 girls, which is a really small number for us, but with our score today, we averaged almost 10 points a girl,” said Brewer coach Jamie Wilkinson.

Hodgins accounted for 24 points as she recorded personal bests in shot put and discus.

“Her marks today in those events were typical of what a good senior would throw … a very good senior,” said Brewer assistant coach Matt Collins. “She’s been a pleasant surprise, especially considering she’s a sophomore.”

Orono was third with 65 points, 24 of which came from Alford, a junior who swept the 100, 200, and 400 dashes with times of 13.87, 28.9, and 1:02.34, respectively.

If not for some construction detours, Dexter’s Meagan Fogarty might have left the meet as a double winner. Well, that and the fact she’s also playing varsity tennis.

“We had a home match today, so I asked my coach if I could play first,” said the sophomore hurdling specialist. “After my match ended, we drove down here and got here just in time to watch the 300 hurdles runners go running by. I heard the [starter’s] beep and saw it start. That was very frustrating.”

Dexter coach Joel Doore, whose girls were fourth (25 points) and boys were third (63), was missing two other team members, who were playing either varsity baseball or softball games.

“That probably cost us 20 to 30 points in all,” said Doore. “That’s the hardest part for me is knowing who’s going to be here and trying to schedule kids into events ahead of time. If the weather’s good, I know they’re probably not going to be here and I scratch them.”

The Brewer boys also won convincingly with 247 points. Hermon was second with 113, 30 of which came from King, who won the high (5 feet, 10 inches), long (18-53/4), and triple (40-8) jumps, and finished third in the 110 high hurdles.

Other multiple winners in the boys meet were Brewer’s Dan Peterson, who won the 110 and 300 hurdles and ran the first leg for Brewer’s winning 4-by-400 relay team; and Hermon’s Matt Joy, who won the 100 and 200 and ran the first leg of Hermon’s second-place 4-by-100 relay.

Bangor Christian’s Mike Wagner won the javelin throw, was second in the discus, and fourth in the shot put.
