DOVER-FOXCROFT – A local man was arrested for theft and may face two other charges after a standoff Friday morning with police.
Bronson Keefe, 23, was taken to Piscataquis County Jail, where his bail was set at $90. Police also plan to charge him with eluding an officer and resisting arrest in connection with the incident.
Police received a call Friday morning from Keefe’s mother, who reported her son had assaulted her and his brother, according to Dover-Foxcroft Police Chief Dennis Dyer. She claimed her son had broken into her safe and taken about $300, he said.
As Dyer responded to the Davis Street home, Keefe reportedly fled out a back door. Dyer said he chased Keefe, who at one point tried to convince Dyer that he had a gun in his pocket.
“He was trying to get me to shoot him,” he said. Keefe then reportedly pulled a knife from his pocket and put it to his own throat threatening to kill himself.
Dyer said he backed away from Keefe and called for assistance as Keefe fled again.
Lt. Scott Arno and Officer Graham Pierce of the Dover-Foxcroft Police Department and Lt. Robert Young of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department found Keefe on Lincoln Street, but he again put the knife to his throat, according to Dyer.
The officers backed off and Keefe returned to Davis Street, where he held off police for about two hours, Dyer said.
The Maine State Police tactical team was called to assist and Keefe eventually surrendered. Dyer said he put the knives down and gave police a gun that had been inside the house. Police found a second gun upstairs in the house.
Drugs and alcohol were involved in the incident, Dyer said.
The chief was incredulous about the imposed bail.
“We have six Dover-Foxcroft police officers, three deputies from the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department and three state troopers, have a four-hour standoff and he gets a $90 bail,” he said. “At any point, anyone of us could have been killed.”
