Red Sox help pitch Reading Game

Red Sox Reading Game

The Massachusetts Teachers Association has established a partnership with the Boston Red Sox and Verizon to promote reading among New England children through the MTA-Red Sox Reading Game.

Children who pledge to read nine books, one for each position on the ball field, will be entered in a drawing to win free tickets to see a Red Sox game. Two hundred and fifty winners will receive a pair of tickets to the Sept. 12 game at Fenway Park. Entry forms are available at Borders at the Bangor Mall, or visit www.readingmatters.org to learn more.

Minor league football

BANGOR – The Penobscot SeaDragons, northern Maine’s only minor league football team, has started practice for the season in the New England Football League. The SeaDragons are seeking wide receivers and offensive and defensive linemen. Those interested should call 947-0564, or 947-8361.

YMCA youth golf program

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA is accepting registrations for its youth golf program, which runs Mondays, June 9-July 28. Thea Davis at Hermon Meadow Gold Club will provide professional instruction. The program, for ages 10-16, provides 10 hours of instruction, golf shirt, equipment and transportation. The Greater Bangor Open committee sponsors the program and provides scholarships and reduced fees The cost is $25 for members, $55 for others.

The YMCA is also accepting registrations for a four-person golf scramble at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 21. Registration is at 7 a.m. Team cost is $250 and includes cart, catered barbecue, team photos and prizes for teams and individuals. Hole sponsorships are available for $75. The scramble is a fund-raiser for the YMCA Youth Golf Program.
