Marshall helps Sumner tip GSA for Class C title Camden Hills captures ‘B’ crown

BANGOR – There couldn’t have been a better tennis player for the Sumner girls to have their hopes on than Nikki Marshall.

As Marshall huddled with coach Joe Haroutunian between the second and third sets of her No. 3 singles match, Haroutunian gave Marshall the lowdown on what had happened in the rest of the Tigers’ matches against George Stevens in Wednesday’s Eastern Maine Class C championship at Bangor High School.

“He said, yeah, it’s up to you,” Marshall said. “So I was little nervous, but I had to do it for the team. … I thought I was gonna die out there.”

Marshall, Sumner’s captain and only senior, needed about three hours to rally past GSA’s Anastasia Osage, wrapping up the Class C regional title with a 3-2 win over the Eagles of Blue Hill.

The Camden Hills girls, meanwhile, got a key win at first doubles and let standout Laura Stein seal the victory as the Windjammers topped Mount Desert Island 3-2. Lewiston beat Brunswick 4-1 in the Class A competition.

The three winning teams advance to Saturday’s state championships at Bates College in Lewiston. Lewiston meets Western Maine champ Kennebunk at 9 a.m., Sumner faces North Yarmouth Academy in the Class C match at noon, and Camden Hills plays Yarmouth in the B final at 3 p.m.

In Class C, Marshall beat Osage twice in the regular season, but Osage took the first set of Wednesday’s match 6-3.

“I talked to my coach in between sets,” Marshall said. “He told me I just needed to start playing my game. When I play someone who doesn’t hit the ball hard enough it’s harder for me. I decided to start hitting the ball harder and it definitely worked.”

The match came to an end when Marshall put a shot down the line and Osage returned it into the net. Marshall took the final sets 6-0 and 6-2.

“I think what Nikki likes to do is hit the ball short, have you come up and lob the ball over your head,” George Stevens coach Tim Farrar said. “We talked about not coming to the net so much and staying back. It worked out well the first set and not as well the next two.”

Sumner’s first-singles standout Mary Francis cruised past Kirstin Reuter 6-0, 6-0 and the Tigers’ undefeated second singles player Brittany Dunbar rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bethany Roberts.

The Eagles picked up both doubles’ wins. Samantha Haskell and Jen Oliveri earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alison Drinkwater and Katelyn Parker, while Lia Horton and Mesa Shubeck beat Jordan Reed and Terra Sargent 6-0, 6-3.

In the Class B matchup, the Trojans and the Windjammers battled at second singles and in both doubles matches and were tied at two match wins apiece as Stein finished up against MDI’s tough Morgan Alley.

Stein had a long wait before facing Alley because the final Class C match took so long. She paced and listened to music.

Stein also got to watch much of the doubles matches, in which Camden Hills’ first doubles team of Lindsay Ames and Charlotte Croce edged Sarah Madeira and Trina Smith 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4.

“We knew it was going to come down to one of the doubles matches, just knowing the strength of the singles players on this team,” Stein said. “They kept their focus, they didn’t beat themselves and that’s what they needed to do.”

With a player like Stein waiting at first singles, the Trojans knew they needed as many wins as possible.

MDI’s second doubles team of Leah Joy and Sarah Zirnkilton rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Abby Rainsley and Hannah Hanscom.

Emily Christie of MDI held off Eira Overkill 7-6 (7), 6-4 for a second singles win. Emily O’Connor gave the Windjammers a third-singles win, topping Ashley Clough 6-4, 6-2.

“We were down a little bit in the doubles and I said, look, you’re making a lot of unforced errors and you have to take care of those balls,” MDI coach Bob Christie said. “They did, in first and second [doubles]. But the [first doubles team] got a little tentative. The nerves got pretty tight out there.”

In Class A action, Brunswick’s Jillian Cohen beat Lewiston standout Amy Sarrazin 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in a first singles match. Cohen lost to Sarrazin last year. Lewiston’s Katie Morin continued her undefeated season at second singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Diana Cornell. Alli Bleakney of Lewiston topped Celia Laskey 6-3, 7-5 in third singles.

The first doubles team of Roxanne Healey and Beth Melanson rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 (7-5) win over Courtney Hammond and Samantha Haaland. Amanda Bergeron and Jessica Roy beat Elise Fitzgerald and Natalie Acevedo 6-0, 6-0.
