DNA leads to alleged gravestone vandal

AUGUSTA – Cigarette butts and broken beer bottles have led police to a 16-year-old boy who allegedly toppled more than 120 gravestones in two local cemeteries.

The Mount Hope and Forest Grove cemeteries were vandalized on June 29, 2002. DNA testing on litter left at the scene implicated a juvenile with a criminal record, Augusta Detective Chris Massey told the Kennebec Journal on Friday.

Police believe the boy, who has been charged with aggravated criminal mischief, did not act alone. Authorities are trying to identify another DNA profile that was obtained from evidence gathered at the scene. Massey said the 16-year-old boy has told police that an adult took part in defacing the gravesites.

Since it would have cost the city $8,000 to reset the headstones, epoxy was used to set the stones back in place, said Anna Blodgett, director of Augusta’s parks and cemeteries.

Massey declined to reveal the identity or hometown of the boy because he’s a juvenile.
