Sea Dogs shut out Navigators

PORTLAND – Chris Elmore pitched six shutout innings and Tony Schrager belted a homer as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Norwich Navigators 2-0 Monday in the Eastern League.

Portland (34-23) got strong relief efforts from Charlie Weatherby, who pitched two hitless innings, and Anastacio Martinez, who worked a perfect ninth.

The Navigators (26-32) hit only three singles against Elmore (1-0) in his Portland debut, and advanced only three runners to scoring position.

The Sea Dogs scored the only run they’d need when Schrager led off the fourth inning with a long homer off the left centerfield scoreboard. Portland added a run later in the inning when Carlos Leon reached on an error, advanced to third on Kevin Youkilis’ single and scored on Kelly Shoppach’s sacrifice fly.

Portland center fielder Jeremy Owens made the fielding gem of the game in the sixth inning with a dramatic leaping catch that robbed Alejandro Freire of a homer.

Williams signed by SEPBL

NEW YORK – John Henry Williams’ next stop will be the Southeastern League of Professional Baseball.

The son of Hall of Famer Ted Williams, who was released by the Northern League’s Schaumburg Flyers on May 28, was signed by the unaffiliated developmental league, the SEPBL announced Monday.

Williams, 34, will play for the Selma Cloverleafs. He will join the team Thursday in Pensacola, Fla., the league announced.
