Maine’s top high school softball players will have a chance to show off their skills at four all-star games this week.
The Penobscot Valley Conference’s best players, regardless of their year, will play in the PVC all-star games tonight at Coffin Field.
Thursday, the state’s top senior players will participate in the Maine Softball Coaches Association’s all-star game at Cony Park in Augusta. The association will also name a Miss Maine Softball Thursday.
There will be two PVC games this year. The C-D all-stars will play at 6:30 p.m. and the A-B game will start at about 8.
Thursday’s senior all-star games will be held at 5:30 p.m. for the girls from Classes C and D, and 7:30 for Classes A and B. Both games will go nine innings.
Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Coaches who are association members can enter for free.
The rain date is Friday.
Bucks show support for Detour
The Bucksport softball team showed off its support for Ryan Detour after last week’s Eastern Maine Class B final against Winslow.
Detour was a Bucksport wrestler who died after a match in December. The senior was friendly with just about everybody, classmate and Bucks second baseman Jessie Taylor said.
During the award ceremony after the Eastern Maine softball game at Brewer’s Coffin Field, some of the Golden Bucks were wearing black T-shirts that have Detour’s name on them.
The shirts were on sale during the school year.
“We got them in basketball season and we wear them all the time,” said Taylor, who helped coordinate the effort. “It keeps us grounded. It’s just a game, and that’s why we wear them. A lot of people through the community bought them and I know some of the boys wear them under [their uniforms].”
The money raised from T-shirt sales goes to a scholarship in Detour’s name, Taylor added.
