Hiking society honors volunteer of the year

BAR HARBOR – Friends of Acadia volunteer crew leader Julia Schloss of Bar Harbor has been named the American Hiking Society Volunteer of the Year in Maine.

Schloss was nominated by Friends of Acadia and Acadia National Park because of her leadership and dedicated work on the ground in Acadia.

She has worked and provided leadership on projects involving park and community trails and chairs the “Volunteer Crew Leader” program.

Schloss, a former nursing supervisor and a fiber artist, is a member of the Bar Harbor Conservation Commission, Village Connector Trails Committee, and MDI Tomorrow community design and land-use work group.

The American Hiking Society, a national recreation-based conservation organization, was established in 1976 and is dedicated to establishing, preserving and maintaining footpaths in America.
