Classes A, D win all-star games

BREWER – The Class A and Class D teams emerged victorious from Tuesday’s Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star softball games at Coffin Field.

The Class A All-Stars edged Class B 8-6 and the Class D stars got by Class C 3-1 earlier in the evening.

In the late game, Sarah DeFilipp’s RBI single to right on a 2-2 pitch with one out in the top of the seventh inning scored the winning run for Class A.

For the “A” stars, Brewer’s DeFilipp started the game on the mound, left in the third, then returned in the seventh and retired three of the four batters she faced to the save game for Hampden Academy’s Ashlea Ireland, who pitched the fifth and sixth innings and notched the win.

The “A” girls scored an insurance run on an RBI groundout by Brewer’s Christine Thoms in the seventh.

In the early game, Heather Bram’s RBI groundout and a run-scoring error were the difference.

Lee Academy’s Jessie Kuester hit a solo home run in the fourth and her fellow “D” stars came up with two more in the fifth, courtesy of a single by Katahdin’s Brandi Violette, two passed balls, a hit batter, an RBI groundout by Deer Isle-Stonington’s Bram, and an error. Bram also notched the win in relief.

The “C” stars scored their only run to tie the game on an RBI single by Rachel Wardwell in the fifth.
