UMaine memories

Over many years we have been associated with the University of Maine and its many programs, we have had the good fortune to witness many memorable events. Frequently, these have involved the university’s athletic programs. This past weekend (March 23-24) was another of those memorable occasions involving the university’s hockey team and the pep band.

The hockey team played and it was memorable; when the hockey play stopped, the pep band played and it was memorable; and then it all was repeated, many times over. The hockey team and the band were extraordinary.

The fans were there, and here mention must be made of the Leonard families and the “painting” of their kids and the adjacent fans, and how all “rose” to the occasion in the closing minutes of the Minnesota game. Somehow I don’t think television could quite capture the total involvement of the players, both hockey and band, and the fans. It was an event rarely experienced at any other university. It speaks of the uniqueness of Maine and its people.

Saturday, against Boston College was an even greater effort on the part of our players, in spite of the presence of an estimated 6,000 vocal BC fans. That game could have so easily had a different outcome!

We would like to offer our appreciation to coach Shawn Walsh, his staff and his players; to band director Chris White and the band members; to the University of Maine Athletic Department and the great effort they are making on behalf of the great University of Maine, the best kept secret in the state of Maine; and finally to all of the Maine alumni and fans for supporting the university. All have contributed to some of the treasures of our lives.
