Waterfront culture Bangor concert series a different summer beat

BANGOR – Ah summer, the season of grills, pools, shorts and, most importantly, live music outdoors. For folks eager to stake out a patch of grass, pull up a lawn chair or spread a blanket, and relax in the open air, look no further than the Bangor waterfront.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, July 3, the Bangor Center Corp. will continue its annual Twilite Delite Concert Series with the All American Big Band. It’s the third in a series of six free outdoor concerts taking place Thursday nights through July 24 behind the harbor master’s building on Front Street.

“The concerts are free to the public and we have a tradition of having hundreds of people turn out for them,” Sally Bates, the city’s community and economic development officer, said. “It’s a great way to add programming to a beautiful space.”

The series began on June 19 with “A Gaelic Gala!,” a “Heritage” concert celebrating Irish music, and was followed on June 26 by Hellenic Star, with a program of Greek music. The third “Heritage” concert on July 17 will feature Klezmer music, a traditional form of Eastern European-Jewish music, by Tzena-Tzena!

The “Heritage” series is sponsored by the newly inaugurated Bangor Museum and Center for History. These special concerts, focusing on ethnic heritage through music, will bring diverse and often little-heard musical genres from around the world to the Bangor’s waterfront.

“Bangor Center Corporation presents these concerts every year, but the specific sort of flavor of this year’s programming was inspired by the Bangor Museum and Center for History’s current exhibit, “From Away: Exploring Bangor’s Cultural Heritage,” Bates explained.

Rounding out the Twilite Delite series will be performances by perennial favorites The Memphis Belles and the Belle Boys on July 10 and by the Flash in the Pans steel drum band July 24, sponsored by Bangor Hydro-Electric Co.

“If you’re only going to make it to see one of the concerts, see Flash in Pan steel drum band,” Bates said enthusiastically. “People of all ages love them”
