MOUNT DESERT – Fire destroyed a camplike structure on Eastern Way early Tuesday morning and was so extensive that investigators doubt they ever will know how it started, according to Fire Chief Chris Farley.
The 20-by-25-foot camp was engulfed in flames when the first firefighter arrived on the scene moments after the 1:30 a.m. call, Farley said.
The roof already had collapsed and there was no hope of salvaging the one-story structure, owned by Barbara Lawson and located on the private lane off Pretty Marsh Road, Farley said.
No one was in the camp at the time of the blaze, and there were no injuries, the chief said.
A state fire marshal inspected the site Tuesday, but the fire was so hot that it left little evidence behind, Farley said.
Two dozen volunteer firefighters from Mount Desert responded to the fire, while Bar Harbor and Tremont provided mutual aid at the fire scene, and Southwest Harbor volunteers covered the Mount Desert station.
