Lots of fun, frolic and a bit of learning, too, await all who attend events surrounding the sesquicentennial celebration for Veazie.

Residents invite everyone to extend the Independence Day holiday and join in the celebration of the town’s 150th anniversary by taking part in activities running from Thursday to Sunday, July 10-13.

Under the leadership of Councilor Rod Hathaway, Town Manager Bill Reed and Recreation Director Rosemary Freese, Veazie residents have planned three days of celebratory events to commemorate this special year in their town’s history.

Tom Logan directs the Veazie Revue, which begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at the Veazie Community School.

A program of song and dance, the revue is based on a history of Veazie written years ago by Jean Hamilton.

Making guest appearances in the revue will be WLBZ-TV 2 television personalities Ric Tyler and Donna Gormley, along with popular local singing trio the Memphis Belles.

Before the revue, you can enjoy dessert from the Eastern Maine Community College culinary arts program.

Admission to the dessert and revue is $5, and $3 for children 12 and under.

Open houses, a garden tour and a street dance are featured events for Friday, July 11.

Tour the Veazie Municipal Building, the Veazie Congregational Church and the new Senior Center from 1 to 4 p.m., or for $5 take the garden tour through old and new Veazie neighborhoods, then end your afternoon at a lemonade social.

Two live bands will be featured at the free street dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, at the Community Center parking lot.

Saturday of the sesquicentennial begins with a pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. under a big tent on the ball field behind the school. Admission is $4 and $2 for children 6 and under.

Bingo fans will be able to play beginning at 11 a.m., and from 1 to 4 p.m. Freese and members of her recreation committee will be hosts for everything from a bungee run to a Velcro wall for the youngsters.

The Veazie Congregational Church opens the doors of its regular bean supper at 4:45 p.m., and all are welcome. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Fireworks, at approximately 9:15 p.m., at the ball field, will close out that day’s activities.

The ball field tent will be the site of a worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 13, and the closing ceremony for the sesquicentennial will be a time capsule burial ceremony at 1 p.m. Contents of the capsule have been prepared by Veazie students and other residents.

An Open Microphone and Talent Night will benefit Samaritan Inc. Food for Life of Bangor.

Samaritan President Bonnie Rittal reports Open Mike Night will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 11, at the historic Union Street Brick Church in Bangor.

Admission is $5 per person, and microphones, a sound system and full stage lighting will be available.

Presale tickets are available for the St. Croix Valley International Garden Club Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, in Calais.

Tickets are $12 each and may be purchased from any Garden Club member.

Tickets on the day of the tour are $15 each.

The event includes tea and dessert at the home of Sally Smith, and a plant sale as well.

Individuals and organizations still making summer plans might want to enter the Hampden Children’s Day parade, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Reeds Brook Middle School.

In a reverse of the past, the parade will end at the junction of Routes 9 and 202, reports Hampden Children’s Day committee member Amy Lorenzo.

The parade theme, “Celebrating Children: Hampden Academy’s Past, Present & Future,” honors the school’s 200th anniversary.

Businesses, organizations, clubs, groups, friends and neighbors are invited to participate.

KidsPeace will provide materials and assistance for children who want to decorate bikes for the parade, and prizes will be awarded in several categories.
