Old Town stars seek state crown

OLD TOWN – The Old Town all-stars advanced to the championship round with two victories in the state Senior League softball tourney over the weekend at the high school field.

Old Town beat Biddeford on Saturday 4-0 and defeated Bayside on Sunday 5-2.

Old Town advanced to Tuesday’s 5 p.m. game against the winner of Monday’s game between Biddeford and Bayside. That winner would have to beat Old Town twice to claim the state title.

Monica Hussey and Jamie Gomm combined to allow no runs on two hits and two walks while striking out 13 to help Old Town win on Saturday.

Allison Grant tripled to drive in two runs in the fourth inning for Old Town. Meghan McKay had two singles and Patricia Shirland hit a RBI single in the fourth inning.

Chantel Tourigny doubled for Biddeford and Kristen Nadeau hit a single.

On Sunday, Hussey and Gomm struck out 12 Bayside batters, giving up only one hit and no earned runs, to lead Old Town victory.

Patricia Shirland hit a triple and a single for Old Town. Jen Higgins had a RBI single and Gomm singled.

Lindsey Hanna ripped a single in the seventh inning for Bayside to break up the no-hitter.

At Bangor, Kim Jordan hit a double and two singles and pitched a two-hitter to help lead Bangor to the win.

Lindsey Allen also had a double and two singles while Taylor Lewis added three singles. Julie Clifford added a double and a single for Bangor while Jerri Cosgrove chipped in with a triple.

Elizabeth Fox and Ruth Mayers each hit a single for the Orono-Veazie effort.

Katahdin 9, Brewer 1

At Bangor, Evan McCarthy pitched a three-hitter, struck out 10 batters and walked four to lead Katahdin to the District 3 championship Thursday.

Ethan Qualey led the offense with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Tyler Robinson had two singles.

Singles by Joey Perry, Evan Nadeau, and Billy Bissell accounted for Brewer’s hits.

Bangor 7, Orono-Veazie 6

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Jessefa Murphy scored from first base on an error in the bottom of the seventh as Bangor held off Orono-Veazie.

The two teams will meet up again for the championship Monday at 7:30 p.m. The winner will be in the Senior League World Series as the District 3 host get an automatic bid.

Eric Anderson had an RBI single in the seventh to plate Brian Hackett (double, single, RBI) and tie the game. Keith Clifford hit three singles, Murphy singled and drove in two runs, and Jordan Heath hit two singles.

Dustin Thomas led Orono-Veazie with a home run, a double, and three RBIs. Mike Tardiff singled and drove in two runs.

Katahdin 18, Holbrook 17

At Thirteenth Street Field in Bangor Sunday, the Katahdin all-stars won the District 3 ages 9-10 title behind a 12-hit attack.

Kolby Gallagher led the attack with two doubles, a single and three RBIs for Katahdin. Cody Cunningham had three singles and an RBI, Cody Robinson had two doubles and an RBI, and Brandon Robinson had two singles and an RBI. Robinson notched a complete-game victory.

Ryan Adams hit an inside-the-park home run, a single, and had four RBIs for Holbrook. Peter Schultz and Thomas Schultz each had two singles and an RBI.

On Saturday, Holbrook forced Sunday’s if-necessary game thanks to a four-hitter by Ray Bessette, who struck out 12 hitters and walked three. He also had two singles and an RBI.

Gallagher hit two singles and drove in a run for Katahdin.

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Kyle Vanidestine singled three times, drove in three runs, and scored five runs as Bangor powered past Hampden.

The two teams meet again today at 5 p.m. for the District 3 championship.

Aaron Santerre and Gordon Webb each hit two singles and tallied three RBIs for Bangor. Alex Gallant hit a double, a single, and had an RBI.

Bobby Seger tripled, singled and drove in a run for Hampden. Joel Neill singled twice and added an RBI.
