Adding to life’s toolbox

I read with both amusement and agreement Dr. Erik Steele’s column about “life’s toolbox for young women” (BDN, July 22). I would, however, like to suggest a couple of additions.

I advise anybody who chooses to carry a firearm in self-defense to take at least one handgun safety course, which is required in the application for a concealed-carry permit. Also, they should spend many hours becoming acquainted with their firearm, not only in practice at a firing range, but also in the assembly and maintenance of the piece, which is essential if the gun is to operate flawlessly on a moment’s notice.

While a handgun obviously is not something every young woman will choose to “keep in her toolbox,” I have one suggestion for all young women, especially those living alone: a large dog. A German shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiler or even a well-socialized pit bull terrier could make an invaluable addition to a young woman’s life in many respects.

Every one of the items on Dr. Steele’s list, both practical and metaphorical, are appropriate and thought-provoking. I can only hope that my humble additions may also be of some use to somebody.
